Snoopy, AB

My childhood memory is of reading Snoopy books and drawing Snoopy. I was 13 or 14 and I read lots and lots. It was my favourite thing and I loved to draw. Snoopy’s great.

hotdog, Reneltta

When I was a little girl living in the bush, I was running down the path and I tripped and fell. I went crying to my grandmother and showed her the cut on my hand. She was putting those iodine sticks that they used to have on it and when I looked up to the sky, I saw a hotdog fly across the sky with the bun. I pointed it out to grandma and said, ”Grandma, Grandma did you see that?” and she looked up and by that time it was already gone. Then I went up to my grandpa and said, “Grandpa, Grandpa, did you see that?” and by that time it was already gone. To this day, I truly believe I saw a hotdog fly across the sky with the bun.

Encyclopedia Brown was my favourite book character and series in fourth and fifth grade. I checked out as many books from my school and public library as I possibly could. I wanted to find a friend like him to solve mysteries with. He was just so witty and clever.

shark, Lumans

The last time I touched a shark was also the first time I touched a shark. It was at a shark fishing tournament in Florida. I loved sharks. I made lists of all the species after school. I drew them all the time. And then I actually had the chance to touch one in real life. Except it was dead and hanging on a hook. Looking back on it now, this was both the right way and the worst way to approach what I had seen in Jaws as the powerful machines of the deep. But I will never forget touching its skin for the first time, finding it cold, finding smooth one direction and rough the other.

waterballoon, Jisun

I was maybe six years old and we were living in a third floor apartment. I was with my older brother and he wanted to play water balloons with me. I found a big one and we just dropped it from the third floor. We got in trouble from the person who saw us. He kept calling and calling to our parents and they had to pay all the money to fix the car. It was a normal sized balloon and not the tiny ones. The sound was crazy. It was loud! It was my brother’s idea but I felt so guilty about it.

Standing amongst prairie grass was one of the most beautiful things I’d experienced at that point in my third grade life. Much taller than me, I watched it dance and sway around me. We identified different varieties and learned about the ecosystem. Fieldtrips definitely have a greater impact on learning.

playhouse, Victoria

This is my playhouse that I used to play in when I was a kid all the way up to the age of probably 10 or 11. An adult could stand up in the middle, it was that big. I played in it almost everyday and it was in the backyard.

I fully understood what Fall meant from all the maple trees in our front yard. This newly acquired chore seemed endless as each weekend, there would just be more leaves to rake and gather into garbage bags. There were those fun moments of diving into the leaf piles...but eventually it had to be raked up again. Good thing I had siblings.

Cinnamon and sugar shakers, Cinnamon Toast Crunch bakers...likely captivated by the commercial as this cereal somehow got into our house. I’m quite certain I’m the only one who ever ate it. I do love that combination still.
