This growing collection began from a project I did in university documenting my immediate environment—the school campus. Through looking at surface and the patterns/textures/designs that surrounded us, I became particularly interested in the variety of grates and sewer covers/manholes I came across. Travelling regularly on my return to Asia, I started collecting images of them as each was a unique memory marker. It was not as feasible to continue making rubbings so I switched to film photography and moved on to digital in 2005.
